Green Tree Mall is a shopping mall located in Clarksville, Indiana. The mall is located off of I-65 about four miles (6 km) north of downtown Louisville. It has a total area of 795,382 square feet (73,893 m2). It was named for a large boundary tree of considerable age that once stood at the location. Currently, there are more than 80 inline stores and 2 major anchor stores (Dillard's and JCPenney). The third anchor was Sears which closed on October 1, 2017. The mall is managed by CBL & Associates Properties, who bought it from Macerich in 2013.

History

Built by Clarksville developer Robert J. Prentice in 1968 along what was then McCulloch Pike (Hwy 131) on land that for years had been a cornfield, Green Tree Mall became the major retail catalyst for Clarksville's northern growth. After learning that the State of Indiana would build north and south exits off I-65 onto Hwy 131, Prentice decided to construct his new shopping mall on farm land he had purchased on Hwy 131. This savvy business decision was preferable to building retail strip centers in New Albany and Jeffersonville.

JCPenney and Sears were the initial anchor stores located on either end of the mall which was lined with 50 retail shops between the anchors. Danner's, a "Five & Dime" novelty store was another prominent regional retailer. Prentice sold the mall in 1977 to a New York firm, The Macerich Real Estate Company. JCPenney and Sears remain at their original locations and Dillard's anchors the back annex. Dillard's was originally Ben Snyder's and Hess's. The main entrance was built in 1980 during an 22,000 sq ft (2,000 m2) expansion of the mall. The first Texas Roadhouse opened in 1993 and continues to operate today.

The mall was owned by Santa Monica, California company Macerich until June 2013. Macerich acquired the Green Tree East area in 1989, which now has Burlington Coat Factory, T.J. Maxx, Fazoli's, Burger King and Arby's.

Macerich sold the mall in June 2013.

Community involvement

Green Tree Mall plays host to Club Mom, a children's entertainment event, on the first Tuesday of every month. In addition to its club event, the mall has Kids Day, which is similar to a large Club Mom.

In 2007, the mall was set to host the first Kentucky Derby Festival event in Indiana with the U.S. Bank Derby Festival Great Balloonfest, but it was canceled due to poor weather.

Green Tree Mall staff even developed a green thumb in spring of 2007. They earned a grant through the Macerich Louise Marquez special event grants that provided them with funds to purchase plants for the renovation of Bob Hedge Park in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The park is specially designed for children that are handicapped. Staff also participate in cooking at the Ronald McDonald House in Louisville as well as working with other organizations such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries.
